Guide
How number transfers work
Phone numbers belong to an account with a network, so selling one means moving that account, or porting the number, to the buyer.
Mobile numbers
Usually moved by a change of account holder with the current network. The buyer can then port it to any provider.
0800 and freephone numbers
Held on a business account. They can usually be transferred to a new holder and ported between providers.
Before you pay
- Check the seller is the account holder.
- Ask the network how the transfer works and how long it takes.
- Agree the steps and timing in writing.
Please note
Each network has its own rules, and some numbers can't be sold or transferred.
Step by step
- Find a number. Search or browse by type.
- Contact the seller. Use the phone or email on the listing.
- Check it can move. Confirm with the seller's network how it will transfer to you.
- Pay and transfer. Agree how you'll pay and complete the transfer together.
Staying safe
- Talk to the seller by phone, not just email, before you pay.
- Never pay by gift card, crypto or a money transfer app to someone you haven't met.
- Be wary of a price that's far too good, or a seller who rushes you.
- Confirm the seller is the account holder and that the network will allow the transfer before you pay.
